James A. McCave is a 2011 graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Law.  He joined the firm as an associate in 2017 after practicing law in Omaha, Nebraska for three years.  Since becoming an associate at Smith, King & Simmons, P.C., Mr. McCave has acted as Deputy Sheridan County Attorney, in charge of criminal prosecutions in all misdemeanor cases and has acted as lead counsel and assistant counsel in felony cases.  Further, he has appeared as lead counsel in a variety of civil matters including estate planning, guardianships, conservatorships, and probate matters.  Mr. McCave also assists individuals looking to start a new business in the document drafting and filing process.  Mr. McCave is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the South Dakota State Bar Association, and the Nebraska County Attorney’s Association. Mr. McCave also serves as legal counsel for the City of Hay Springs.​
